As nuanced, diverse, and non-homogeneous as the black community is, as far as films go, I think it's pretty safe to say that the movie "The Color Purple" is an undisputed cultural staple. That's why when actress Elizabeth Banks made the claim that Hollywood powerhouse director Steven Spielberg has "never made a movie with a female lead," Black Twitter came hard with a collective 'no ma'am, not today.'
Translation: "He never made a movie where I was offered the lead. Or had a female lead that I cared about(The Color Purple)." pic.twitter.com/zIPgR2tmVq

As reported by The Wrap, the actresses remarks came at the Beverly Hilton while accepting an award from non-profit group, Women in Film. In an attempt to highlight the lack of female narratives in film Banks said, "I went to 'Indiana Jones' and "Jaws' and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made, and by the way, he's never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don't mean to call your ass out but it's true."
Banks wasn't the only one that had something negative to say. Film critic Anne Thompson pulled out her trigger fingers and found the energy to call The Color Purple "a flop."
"THE COLOR PURPLE WAS A FLOP!"
"Wait, didn't it make $93 million and get 10 Oscar nominations?"
"Yeah, but…but it didn't win any! FLOP!" pic.twitter.com/wiUEuhMoP3

Elizabeth Banks' assertion that Spielberg has never made a film staring a female lead is factually incorrect and also understandably triggering for many in the black community who are beyond fed up with the lack of intersectionality persistently displayed in white feminism. Her attempted clap was swiftly clapped back as Twitter came with receipts for her perceived non-intersectional feminist politics.
Our fave Crissle led the charge.
how white do you have to be to consider The Color Purple a flop?

She continued with the facts and the receipts.
11 of them. Grossed over $140 million and stayed at the box office just over five months. Google coulda saved that white lady today but naw. https://t.co/SVNzCbQ6D6

We don't want to hear about this ever again (in Drake voice)
Do you have any idea what The Color Purple, a movie about Southern poor Black women finding their voices, means culturally for Black women? pic.twitter.com/MWxJ1wFdxh

As is often the case when it comes to perceived allyship or lack there of, when it comes to Banks' misinformed statement and Spielberg's contributions…it's complicated.
