#EmbracingKwanzaa is an original series by Grits & Gospel and exclusively distributed through Blavity that is dedicated to putting a spotlight the importance of Kwanzaa's seven principles and how embracing them can better lead to our collective progress.

In this day and age, it’s easy to feel overstimulated, getting caught up in the hustle and bustle each day brings. When you’re deep in the weeds, it’s hard to see the forest for the trees. Why do we put up with so much? What makes it all worth it? What’s the goal?

There’s nobility in purposeful work. Ultimately, you want to contribute to something greater than yourself, and America makes it really easy to forget the more shameful part of its history. Rather than focusing on the painful truth of the unchangeable past, directing our attention on things we currently have control over allows us to walk in our purpose.

Life, in all of its beautiful twists and turns, has its way of kicking your ass. In these moments, what is it that keeps us going? What drives us to pursue more?

It’s the realization that no matter where you are in life, ultimately, there are other people we’re playing for. Walking in your purpose can be something as passive as blazing a trail in your current industry (whether you’re in love with it or not), or as active as making the cause your full-time vocation. No matter how you pursue purpose individually, always remember that this sh*t is bigger than you and me. We are where we are for a reason.

Cheers to an intentional 2018!

When we make our collective vocations the building and developing of our community, in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness, we strive for Nia.

Next up, Kuumba.

Missed a day? We got you!
