Actress and singer Teyana Taylor is slated to star in A Thousand And One, the directorial debut from A.V. Rockwell. The film is slated to be produced by Sight Unseen, Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions and Makeready.

Deadline exclusively broke the news. Taylor, who is no stranger to acting, will portray the lead role of Inez, a mother who kidnaps her six-year-old son, Terry, from the foster care system. Set in New York City, A Thousand And One is currently in production. Rockwell is known for her critically-acclaimed short, Feathers.

Taylor has appeared in films like Coming 2 America and Stomp The Yard: Homecoming. Last year, Taylor’s name was said to be the top candidate to portray music legend Dionne Warwick in a cinematic adaptation of her life.

“It’s going to be a series, we’re planning to do an episodic type of a show. [Teyana] is certainly a talented young lady with whom I’ve had the pleasure of interfacing,” Warwick said to Entertainment Weekly. “In fact, we had a conversation last night on the telephone. She’s very excited about the prospect of being involved and she’s also going to be very, very much involved in directing it and putting together parts and parcel of how we see this going.”

In April, Shadow and Act reported that Taylor provided an update on the project.

“We’re literally at the stages of getting everything laid out. One thing we’re very clear on is that we definitely want it to be a series,” she said to Buzzfeed. “Dionne has been an icon for so many decades — not years, but decades! Her story is still continuing, so we knew an hour-and-a-half movie wasn’t gonna do it. Ninety minutes ain’t enough girl, you need a whole series!
