*Major spoilers below for Avengers: Endgame*
You will never guess how Anthony Mackie reacted when he found out the ending of Avengers: Endgame.
According to an interview on The IMDb Show, Mackie said he hadn’t read the scripted ending of Endgame, and it was actually Chris Evans, who plays Captain America in the film, who told him what goes down.
As fans already know, after defeating Thanos for good, Steve Rogers, otherwise known as Captain America, decides to spend the rest of his life with Peggy after returning the Infinity Stones to their original timelines. When he comes back to the main timeline, he’s an old man. Having lived out the life he was denied, he happily passes on the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, otherwise known as the Falcon.
“We were at his [Evans’] house and he goes, ‘You excited?’ And I go, ‘What are you talking about?’ and he goes, ‘You don’t know?’ He jumps up, runs out of the room and comes back with the script,” said Mackie. “He’s like, ‘Read it!’ And I read the scene and I’m like, ‘Whoa,’ and he goes, ‘Yes!’.”
“We cried. We drank, we laughed,” he said. “I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield but to tell me it was happening in the script.”
Mackie also said the moment has particular significance for him when it comes to presenting positive representations of Black men on screen.
“It means a lot to me for my sons to see Captain America as a Black dude and for me to be that dude to my sons,” he said. “So that moment was not just, ‘Hey, we’re acting.’ It was more of a thing.”
In the comics, Steve does hand the mantle over to Sam, so for hardcore fans, this might not have been a surprise. But for fans who are aware of the MCU’s handling of POC characters, Sam receiving the shield in the MCU might not have seemed like a sure bet. Thankfully, the film stayed true to the comics and, in the process, honored all of the Black fans who have been hoping to see Black superheroes get treated more seriously in the MCU’s Avengers. Also, it’ll be a welcome sight for Black kids, who need more role models of color in the media. Overall, the Falcon as the new Captain America is a welcome sight.
