Ariana DeBose faces down one of Marvel‘s greatest hunters in the new bloody trailer for Sony PicturesKraven the Hunter.

DeBose stars as Calypso, who is a voodoo priestess and tormenter of Kraven the Hunter (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Her story in the comic books is quite brutal, which includes her sacrificing her own sister to increase her voodoo powers. However, it’s probably safe to assume that Calypso will be retconned into something less problematic and stereotypical in the film, since DeBose is wearing stealthy clothing instead of the character’s comic book-accurate leopard bikini.

Kraven the Hunter’s origins also seem retconned from the comic book, which originally included him gaining his powers from Calypso’s herbal potion. In the trailer, you can see Kraven, aka Sergei Kravinoff, gaining his powers from lion’s blood. He also seeks to undo the evil brought upon the world by his father (Russell Crowe), which also seems to be unlike the comic book origins.

What might be a constant from the comic books is the amount of violence Kraven the Hunter employs. Not only is there gun violence and fighting in the R-rated trailer, but Kraven the Hunter bites a man’s nose off before spitting toward the camera.
