Die Hard 2 and A Soldier’s Story actor Art Evans has died. He was 82.

Evans’ publicist, Erica Huntzinger, confirmed his passing to Variety. His cause of death was not shared, but the actor’s obituary said he “passed away peacefully” and was “surrounded by family” at the time of his death.

“Art was not only an incredible actor but a devoted husband, friend, and source of light to everyone who knew him,” Evans’ wife, Babe Evans, said in a statement shared by his representation, USA Today reported. “His laughter, passion, and love of life will be deeply missed. While our hearts are heavy, we celebrate the legacy of joy and inspiration he leaves behind.”

Evans’ acting career began in 1964 when he earned a starring role in James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner at Frank Silvera’s Theater of Being in Los Angeles, Variety reported. The following year, the play made its Broadway debut.

He went on to star in the 1975 TV movie, The Orphan and the Dude. Later on, he appeared in several TV shows and films throughout the ’70s and ’80s, including Leadbelly, Youngblood, M*A*S*H, The Fall Guy, Christine and Hill Street Blues.

His big break came along in 1984, when he, alongside Adolph Caesar and Denzel Washington, starred in A Solider’s Story. The film was critically acclaimed, earning three Academy Award nominations in 1985 for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

In 1986, Evans joined Nine to Five, a TV adaptation of the eponymous film version, which starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. Evans was on the show until 1988.

Evans’ best-known role came in 1990, when he shared the screen with Bruce Willis in Die Hard 2. In the movie, the actor plays Barnes, an air traffic control tower employee who helps Willis’ character, John McClane, stop terrorists.

He later appeared in movies throughout the ’90s and aughts, including films like Big Time, Youngblood, National Lampoon’s Class Reunion and Fright Night, and shows like Doogie Howser, M.D., Family Matters, and The X Files. His last role was in the Disney+ animated series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, in 2022 and 2023.

According to USA Today, memorial services for the actor will be held soon and details about those events will be shared in the next few days.
