Last February, we announced that Swagger, the basketball-themed drama from Kevin Durant and Reggie Rock Bythewood that’s inspired by his childhood, was greenlit by Apple for their upcoming streaming service.
Now, as the series was given go-ahead by Apple in December, an open call for young actors is being held for six roles, all designated to be series regulars. Jinn director Nijla Mu’min, one of our Shadow And Act RISING Award recipients, is a writer on Swagger.
Here are the character descriptions:
1. Jace
Character portrayed is 14 yrs old. African-American, male, MUST BE AT LEAST 6’ TALL. Jace, a six- foot-three man-child struggles to deal with the pressures of being one of the top ranked basketball players in the country. He has to learn to be a leader in addition to a baller. Cocky, competitive, but there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. MUST HAVE INNATE ATHLETIC ABILITY, BASKETBALL A PLUS.
2. Nick
Character portrayed is 14 yrs old. Puerto Rican, male, MUST BE AT LEAST 5’10’. Eye on the prize, even being displaced by Hurricane Maria won’t stop Nick’s drive to be the best basketball player in the country. MUST HAVE INNATE ATHLETIC ABILITY, BASKETBALL A PLUS.
3. Crystal
Character portrayed is 14 yrs old. African American, female. She is attractive and athletic. One of the top female basketball players in the city, she won’t hesitate to play against the boys. MUST HAVE INNATE ATHLETIC ABILITY, BASKETBALL A PLUS.
4. Phil
Character portrayed is 14 yrs old. African American, male, MUST BE AT LEAST 5’10 TALL. Phil is the enforcer for a rival team: Hoops For Life. We never quite know if Phil thinks he’s playing football or basketball. His gruff demeanor and quick temper hide a troubled home life. MUST HAVE INNATE ATHLETIC ABILITY, BASKETBALL A PLUS.
5. Royale
Character portrayed is 14 yrs old. African American, male, ANY HEIGHT. Plays for the rival team: Hoops For Life. His struggle to fit in is only matched by his struggle to live up to his father’s expectations. MUST HAVE INNATE ATHLETIC ABILITY, BASKETBALL A PLUS.
6. Drew
Character portrayed is 14 yrs old. Caucasian, male, AT LEAST 5’8” TALL. From a much more affluent part of town, but has no trouble fitting in on the team. With a great sense of humor, the only thing more impressive than his jump shot is his trash talking. MUST HAVE INNATE ATHLETIC ABILITY, BASKETBALL A PLUS.
