Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson’s Avengers: Endgame characters Thor and Valkyrie could have had a much more comedic ending if a scene from the film hadn’t been cut.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed the moment on Sirius Radio show EW Morning Live. The scene was going to be at the final scene featuring Thor and Valkyrie, in which Thor hands over the kingdom of New Asgard to Valkyrie.
“In the ending, we wanted to keep it tight, so we were looking for things to squeeze there,” said Anthony Russo to EW Morning Live‘s Jessica Shaw and Dalton Ross. “But he had this beat with Valkyrie where she puts her arm on his shoulder and he sort of starts to lean in for a kiss. She goes, ‘What are you doing?'”
Anthony goes on to say that Thor is confused by Valkyrie’s response. “‘Oh, I thought that touch…’ and she was like, ‘No, that was like, a goodbye tap I was giving you,'” he said, describing the two characters’ interaction. “It was a really funny beat, but we cut it.” Joe also added that the “really cute” moment “was mostly improvised by the two of them.”
In the long run, it’s a good thing the moment got cut since, at least in this writer’s opinion, the comical moment would have undercut the seriousness of Valkyrie becoming New Asgard’s next leader.
But we’ll be able to see tons of fun moments between Hemsworth and Thompson in Men in Black: International, where their friendship is once again put on center stage. Men in Black: International comes to theaters June 14.
