And the 2016/2017 film awards season is underway, with The IFP Gotham Awards kicking things off this morning with its list of nominees. Ten categories were unveiled today for the 26th edition of the annual awards, considered by many to be the unofficial start of the awards season. Winners will be revealed on November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street. At the event, Amy Adams, Ethan Hawke and Oliver Stone will receive 2016 Gotham tributes, and producer Arnon Milchan will receive the group’s industry tribute.

In addition to “Moonlight,” which received a nomination for Best Feature, Craig Robinson is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in “Morris from America”; Ruth Negga is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in “Loving”; in the Best Documentary category, Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro” is a nominee, as well as “O.J.: Made in America” from director Ezra Edelman; Royalty Hightower (“The Fits”) is nominated for Breakthrough Actor; “Moonlight” is also nominated for Best Screenplay and will receive the Special Gotham Jury Award; Reagan Gomez’s apocalyptic digital series “Surviving” is nominated in the Breakthrough Series – Short Form category, as is Darnell Moore’s “The Movement”; and finally the directors of “The Fits” and “Southside With You” (Anna Rose Holmer and Richard Tanne) are nominees in the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director category.

The IFP Gotham Awards, selected by distinguished juries and presented in New York City, the home of independent film, are the first honors of the film awards season. This public showcase honors the filmmaking community, expands the audience for independent films, and supports the work that IFP does behind the scenes throughout the year to bring such films to fruition.

The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) champions the future of storytelling by connecting artists with essential resources at all stages of development and distribution. The organization fosters a vibrant and sustainable independent storytelling community through its year-round programs, which include Independent Film Week, Filmmaker Magazine, the IFP Gotham Awards and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, a new incubator space developed with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.
