With the rights of numerous Marvel characters such as the X-Men headed to Disney in the Mouse House’s deal with Fox, many fans are hoping that one of the most prominent Marvel characters will be accurately cast in a new film.
According to a new interview with Variety, If Beale Street Could Talk star KiKi Layne is stumping for the role of Storm.
The actress, who is getting lots of attention for her riveting role as Tish Rivers in the Barry Jenkins film, says: “She was an image of myself, of a powerful chocolate Black woman, and I just think that’s an amazing image to have, and I really want to play Storm.”
Layne added that her team is already on it. “Oh, yeah. We are actively plotting, actively plotting,” she said.
We reported in December that Disney could begin developing new X-Men films in the first half of 2019.
Halle Berry portrayed Storm in the first four X-Men movies, while Alexandra Shipp played the character in X-Men: Apocalypse. She will reprise that role in this year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which will be one of the final Marvel movies from Fox before the characters are retooled and presumably recast for new films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Layne will be seen in at least two films this year: the sci-fi thriller Captive State and the film adaptation of Native Son. Both films star Ashton Sanders of Moonlight fame.
