The trailer has been released for an upcoming documentary on Ellis Haizlip, the predecessor to Oprah and all the other great black talk show hosts we revere today.

His niece, documentary filmmaker Melissa Haizlip helms this project, Mr. Soul!, which premieres this month at Tribeca.

Haizlip hosted a the weekly TV show, SOUL! that aired on PBS from 1968-1973, celebrating black culture and entertainers, changing the TV landscape. At the time, nothing was on television that celebrated black culture like SOUL!

The trailer depicts the show over its run, including guests like Muhammad Ali, Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou and Patti LaBelle.

The legendary  Haizlip was also one of the few out, black gay men in the public eye at the time, challenging the way blackness was presented and bringing awareness to topical issues such as the Vietnam War.
