BET Networks today announced the nominations for the 2016 “BET Awards,” taking place at Microsoft Theater on Sunday, June 26. This year’s broadcast marks its 16th year.

As this is specifically a film site, in terms of acting and film categories, for Best Actress, Gabrielle Union, Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Viola Davis are nominated; for Best Actor, Anthony Anderson, Courtney B. Vance, Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, and O’Shea Jackson Jr are all nominees; and in the Best Movie category, “Beasts of No Nation,” “Concussion,” “Creed,” “Dope,” and “Straight Outta Compton” are nominees.

Essentially, no surprises; the names and titles that you’d expect. Although there isn’t a lot to choose from to start. And given that these awards typically go for selections that are widely-known and popular, as opposed to fresh *discoveries*, I am surprised that “Underground” didn’t get any attention here in the acting categories, given how immensely successful that show has been for WGN America. Te press release doesn’t state what performances each nominee is nominated for, but most of them are obvious. The actress category is much clearer, because they are all TV lead actresses. But the actor category contains a mix of TV leads and film leads. So it’s not clear what BET’s thinking is here, behind its selections.

But these are who will compete for the network’s highest performance honors.

In terms of music, Drake leads the list of entertainers with nine nominations. Beyoncé and Rihanna follow with five nods each.

Other nominees include newcomer Bryson Tiller who is up for four awards. Chris Brown and Future are also nominated for the same number.

For the first time ever, BET has enlisted renowned choreographer Will “WilldaBeast” Adams to create an exclusive video announcing three of the categories. Alongside his choreography partner Janelle Ginestra, a special compilation has been produced with clips of songs honoring artists nominated. Watch it below.

“These nominees represent depth and diversity in achievement over the past year and we look forward to recognizing them next month,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s President of Programming. “This show will be innovative and special; in addition to celebrating the best in entertainment, we’ll also spend time throughout the show remembering Prince as only BET can. You can count on memorable performances and moments in honor of a true legend.”

The 2016 “BET Awards” will premiere around the world on BET’s international network. It will air in the UK on Tuesday, June 28th at 9:00pm BST, in Africa on Tuesday, June 28th at 7:00pm CAT, and in France on Wednesday, June 29th at 9:00pm CEST.

Stephen G. Hill, BET’s President of Programming, Connie Orlando, BET’s Senior Vice President of Music and Specials, Lynne Harris Taylor, BET’s Vice President of Specials, will serve as Executive Producers for the “BET Awards” along with Jesse Collins, CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment.
