Finally! The trailer for DC Comics and Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has been released.
In the film centering on women superheroines, Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn, Jurnee Smollett-Bell is Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead rounds out the trio as The Huntress. Rosie Perez will portray Renee Montoya.
For the role, multiple trade publications said that Smollett-Bell was up against Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who tested for the role, and Janelle Monáe was also reportedly up for the role.
In the comics, Black Canary (real name Dinah Lance) is one of the earliest superheroines in DC Comics history, first debuting in 1947. The character is often paired with Green Arrow. She has been mostly depicted as a skilled martial artist with her superpower being a shrieking scream called a “canary cry” which can destroy things and dismantle her enemies.
Birds of Prey has a release date set for February 7, 2020. Cathy Yan is the director.
Smollett-Bell also has a major, upcoming TV role this year, alongside Jonathan Majors as one of the leads in Jordan Peele, J.J. Abrams and Misha Green’s Lovecraft Country.
