The Birds of Prey will live on in some form!

A movie spinoff focusing on Jurnee Smollett’s character, Black Canary, is in the works at HBO Max from a frequent collaborator of Smollett’s, Lovecraft Counry showrunner Misha Green. The order comes as a fan campaign lobbied for to make the film a reality.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Green will write the script for the film.

Per THR’s report, “No take on the story was revealed, however Canary is one of DC’s long-standing characters, having been created in the late 1940s. Since the 1960s, she has been associated mostly with Green Arrow and is known for her ear-splitting canary cry. Canary now joins a growing stable of HBO Max movies centered on DC characters such as Batgirl and Blue Beetle, as well as a series focused on a Black Superman.”

In the comics, Black Canary (real name Dinah Lance) is one of the earliest superheroines in DC Comics history, first debuting in 1947. The character is often paired with Green Arrow. She has been mostly depicted as a skilled martial artist with her superpower being a shrieking scream called a “canary cry” which can destroy things and dismantle her enemies.

Smollett starred in last year’s Birds of Prey with Margot Robbie as Harley Queen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya.
