The upcoming film, Boogie, from Focus Features, now has a release date, Shadow and Act has learned. It will hit U.S. theaters on March 5, 2021.

The is the directorial debut of writer, producer and restauranteur Eddie Huang. The film’s official description describes it as “the coming-of-age story of Alfred “Boogie” Chin, a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York, who dreams of one day playing in the NBA. While his parents pressure him to focus on earning a scholarship to an elite college, Boogie must find a way to navigate a new girlfriend, high school, on-court rivals and the burden of expectation.” 

Huang wrote Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir, which was adapted into the popular Fresh Off the Boat television series by ABC.

Huang also wrote Boogie, which stars Taylor Takahashi, Taylour Paige, Pamelyn Chee, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Alexa Mareka, Mike Moh, Perry Yung, and the late rapper Pop Smoke, who makes his posthumous acting debut in the film. Josh Bratman of Immersive Pictures, Josh McLaughlin of Wink Productions and Michael Tadross produced the film.  Rafael Martinez is an executive producer.

The film will have a soundtrack through Victor Victor Worldwide / Republic Records, featuring new music by Pop Smoke.
