In the latest in what the actress has coined “AuntJemimiagate,” Trina McGee has revealed that her Boy Meets World co-star Will Friedle was the person she was referring to in her January 2020 Twitter thread when talking about her experiences on the show, including an instance where a castmate called her Aunt Jemima. She also revealed Friedle apologized 22 years ago and apologized again recently.

“FOR THE RECORD: WILL FRIEDLE the man responsible for AuntJemimagate, apologized to me 22 years ago and again days ago in a in [sic] a three-page letter,” she wrote. “We talked more on it and he acknowledged that he really wasn’t educated enough in his early twenties to know he was truly offending me.”

McGee wrote the incident should be a “teaching moment” for everyone.

“He has conveyed to me how much this has changed his perception of comedy. And humanity. We all fall short of sensitivity at times, but let’s be real on what EXTREME RACISM IS,” she wrote. “I believe extreme racism is when my grandfather had to leave South Carolina in the middle of the night because the clerk had given him the wrong change and he pointed this out to the white store owner and was threatened with lynching.”

“…Will apologized to me and I forgave him, I then apologized to him for making the statements public because his joke came out of just not knowing, not viciousness and he forgave me,” she continued. “That’s what friends do.”

FOR THE RECORD: WILL FRIEDLE the man responsible for AuntJemimagate, apologized to me 22 years ago and again days ago in a in a three-page letter. We talked more on it and he acknowledged that he really wasn’t educated enough in his early twenties to know he was truly offending me. THIS SHOULD AND COULD BE A TEACHING MOMENT FOR ALL. For all people of all races or different backgrounds. He has conveyed to me how much this has changed his perception of comedy. And humanity. We all fall short of sensitivity at times, but let’s be real on what EXTREME RACISM IS. I believe extreme racism is when my grandfather had to leave South Carolina in the middle of the night because the clerk had given him the wrong change and he pointed this out to the white store owner and was threatened with lynching. Scuddie McGee left South Carolina that night for fear of his life. Bringing his small family along with him to New Jersey. I’m not backing down on the truth. It’s stands. Will apologized to me and I forgave him, I then apologized to him for making the statements public because his joke came out of just not knowing, not viciousness and he forgave me. That’s what friends do. Now get back to washing your hands and surviving this pandemic and let love and hope be the next pandemic. #loseonefriendloseallfriendsloseyourself #trinamcgee

McGee’s tweets from January went viral earlier this month. She tweeted about her time on set in January, writing in part, “Called aunt Jemima on set during hair and make up. Called a bitter b***h when I quietly waited for my scene to finish rehearsing that was being f’ed up over and over due to episode featuring my character. Told ‘it was nice of you to join us’ like a stranger after 60 episodes.”

Aside from the Aunt Jemima anecdote, she wrote that the main actors on the show, which include Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel and Will Friedle had “cowardly egos.” “I did my job and I expect my due,” she wrote. “At times the tension of the disrepsect [sic] was extremely stressful. 25 yrs old at the time raising a family and did not deserve to be thinking about this. None of those three colleagues had children. Just cowardly egos and hot diarrhea mouths.”  The actress also clarified that Rider Strong, who played her boyfriend Shawn Hunter on the show, was not among the actors who mistreated her. She did reprise her role on Disney Channel’s Boy Meets World spinoff, Girl Meets World. McGee said in a later interview that she felt slighted over her small role on the show.
