Numbers don’t lie! With early reports saying that Captain Marvel is tracking toward a $150 million domestic opening, fanboys who say that Marvel’s highly anticipated women-centric superhero flick is doomed to fail need to keep their mouths shut.
Based on early numbers, the fact that stars Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson are speaking out about racism and sexism will not in any way threaten Captain Marvel’s ticket sales.
During an interview with TMZ, Jackson, who portrays Nick Fury, was asked his opinion regarding Donald Trump’s comments that he’s done more for African-Americans than any other president.
“Yeah, he’s got a bigger plantation,” Jackson said on Trump, who is known for his well-documented history of racist, sexist and misogynistic behavior.
Throughout the Captain Marvel press tour, Larson has been rightfully outspoken on sexism within the entertainment industry and beyond. She has called for more inclusion in the film industry, which is a predominantly white male one.
“I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him,” the actress said last June regarding the release of Ava DuVernay’s sci-fi film at the Crystal + Lucy Awards.
Captain Marvel, which also stars Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Jude Law and Annette Benning, is set to arrive in theaters on March 8.
