BET+ is getting into the action game with a new film.
The streamer has acquired the rights to action-thriller film Call Her King, according to Deadline. The film stars Naturi Naughton and Lance Gross and will premiere July 6 as a BET+ Original.
The deal is a boon for BlackLight Entertainment, the production company created by Call Her King director Wes Miller and Andrew van den Houten; Call Her King is the production company’s first film. Miller told Deadline in a statement how he feels to have his film be acquired by BET+.
“I am honored to have Call Her King join the BET+ family,” he said. “Their dedication to providing stories to the culture and for the culture is second to none. This film was a passion project for all of us involved and we are proud of the final product. This film is a testament to the strength and resilience of women, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with viewers.”
Naughton plays Judge Jaeda King, who has recently sentenced Sean Samuels (Jason Mitchell) to to death. The court proceeding is turned upside down with Mitchell’s brother Gabriel, aka Black Caesar (Gross) holds King and the court attendees hostage. According to the film’s description, King “must then rely on her wits, strength and skill to find a way to end the standoff, save the hostages and fight her way out.”
Call Her King also stars Nicholas Turturro, Tobias Truvillion, Johnny Messner, Shiobann Amisial and Garrett Hendricks.
