Last week, Fox announced that the network gave a series order to Lee Daniels’ newest effort for the network, “Star,” for the upcoming 2016-2017 season.
Today, the network has assigned Charles Murray as showrunner and executive producer on “Star,” following Murray’s inking of an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.
“Star” is a music-infused drama from Daniels and Tom Donaghy (“The Whole Truth”). It follows 3 talented singers navigating the cut-throat music business on their road to success.
Featuring newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady as the young singers, plus Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt, the series will feature original music, along with musical fantasy sequences, as the girls dream of their future.
Lenny Kravitz will also guest-star.
“Charles [Murray] has written in every conceivable genre, on shows from 20th Century Fox TV NEWSons of Anarchy to Castle to Criminal Minds,” 20th TV president of creative affairs Jonnie Davis said to Deadline. “He literally defines versatility, and he brings a passion for excellence and a confidence to every project. Star is a huge priority for the network; it’s wildly ambitious and packed with talent from the luminous Queen Latifah to the bright young discoveries that form the girl group at its center. Charles is exactly the right showrunner to take on this exciting series and ensure that we not only shoot for the stars but actually reach them.”
Murray’s extensive credits include serving as producer/co-executive producer/supervising producer for series like “Sons of Anarchy,” “Castle,” “Criminal Minds” and others, as well as writer for the upcoming “Roots” reboot, “Sons of Anarchy,” “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” and many more. He’s also a filmmaker, making his feature directorial debut in 2013 with the romantic drama “Things Never Said,” and last year’s horror-thriller “The Summoning.”
Most recently, he served as an executive producer on the first season of Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series, “Luke Cage.”
“Star” is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Lee Daniels, Tom Donaghy, Pamela Oas Williams and Effie Brown serve as executive producers. Daniels and Donaghy wrote the pilot script, which was directed by Daniels.
