A new Clueless is on the way. A dramatic take on the cult classic film, involving a mystery twist, is in development at CBS TV Studios.

This time, Clueless would be focused on Dionne, the character played by Stacey Dash in the 1996 film.

Here’s what Deadline, who broke the news, says of the project: Written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey, the new Clueless–Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video–also is set in high school. It is described as a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend, all in a setting that is uniquely 2020 L.A.?

CBS TV Studios retains the rights to the 1995 film, which spawned a comedy series in 1996. The series ran on ABC and UPN for a combined three seasons.

The original 1995 film, loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel Emma, chronicled life at a Beverly Hills high school with a satirical lens.

There is also a Clueless feature project in development at Paramount with Girls Trip writer Tracy Y. Oliver writing the script.
