The cult classic teen film is in the early stages of being rebooted at Paramount.
Girls Trip writer Tracy Y. Oliver is set as the producer, and Glow writer Marquita Robinson would write the script.
Details are slim as of now, and it’s not even clear if this would be a new story with new characters, or if the old characters would return in their roles somehow.
The original 1995 film, loosely based off of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, chronicled life at a Beverly Hills high school with a satirical lens.
It served as a breakout vehicle and launching pad for many young actors and actresses at the time: Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Sisto, Brittany Murphy and, of course, Stacey Dash.
A television series ran for a short time on both ABC and UPN before being axed. A Clueless musical is set to debut soon off-Broadway.
Oliver has been busy. She’s helming Paramount Network’s television adaptation of First Wives Club, which has a Black cast. She also scripted the upcoming film adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s The Sun Is Also a Star, starring Yara Shahidi, and has been attached as a writer for the Justin Simien-directed biopic on Sylvia Robinson.
For Girls Trip, she became the first Black woman to write a film that has grossed $100M in the U.S.
