Confederate is officially out of development no more. The project is virtually dead as its creators, David Benioff & D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) have signed a new deal with Netflix. They will have no existing projects in development at HBO. At Netflix, they join creators like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.

The last we heard about Confederate was back in 2018 when it was revealed to still be in development by HBO president Casey Bloys, though Bloys said the project wasn’t actively being worked on.

After the initial announcement of the faux history show, the network and execs made a series of apologies. Bloys once said, “If I had to do it over again, what I would do to introduce the idea is what we ended up doing after the fact with the four producers, which is to have them sit with journalists.” 

Aside from Benioff and Weiss, two prominent Black producers, Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Malcolm Spellman were involved in the project, at least during its initial announcement.

According to its official description, the series would have chronicled “the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”
