Black filmmakers are once again disproving Hollywood’s adage that Black films don’t sell to the mainstream public. Not only do they sell, but they outperform–just take a look at Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. He has now become the fourth Black director to have a film gross $100 million domestically in 2018. Again: Caple is the fourth black director this year to gross $100 million at the American box office.
Creed II has made around $104,882,976 according to Box Office Mojo.

This equals a large profit for the film, which only cost $50 million to make. Caple now belongs in the rarefied air of the other three Black directors who scored big this year–Black Panther ‘s Ryan Coogler, The Equalizer 2‘s Antoine Fuqua and A Wrinkle in Time‘s Ava DuVernay. Black Panther made the most money out of all of them, a whopping $700 million. The Equalizer 2 comes next with $102 million, and A Wrinkle in Time made $100.4 million.
Black cinema has definitely been working overtime this year, what with important films like The Hate U Give and BlacKkKlansman, documentaries such as The Life and Death of Sandra Bland and crowd-pleasers like Widows and Sorry to Bother You. It only makes sense that this year, we’d have so many directors making tons of bank at the box office.
