Director David Gordon Green is in the process to direct a new Universal Pictures movie based on the 2004 movie adaptation of Buzz Bissinger’s book Friday Night Lights. Yes, this is the same Friday Night Lights that spawned the highly successful NBC drama in 2006, which brought us several of the stars we know today, including acting and producing powerhouse Michael B. Jordan.

As reported by Deadline, the new film, like the book, original film (which starred Derek Luke) and television show, will chronicle the joys and heartbreak of a small town gripped by the power of Friday night high school football. There’s no other word on how the new film will differ from either the 2004 film or the 2006 show. In particular, there’s no indication if any of the show’s cast, including Jordan, would be a part of the film in any capacity. However, there is one returning crew member from the original film: Imagine Entertainment producer Brian Grazer.

The film’s script is written by Rober Schenkkan (Hacksaw Ridge). Tyler Mitchell will manage Imagine Entertainment’s production of the film and Universal’s production team for the film include Executive Vice President of Production Jon Mone and creative executive Lexi Barta.
