Acclaimed filmmaker Euzhan Palcy ("Rue cases nègres," "A Dry
White Season," "Les mariées de l’isle Bourbon") among
other esteemed filmmakers, scholars and experts, will participate in a day long series
of panels and round-tables on October 18th, on the always important topic of Pan-Africanism and Negritude, and how it fits into
what today would be considered modern cinema.
The event is part of "Movements: The June Givanni Pan-African Cinema Archive and the University of the
Arts London program." Ms Givanni being, of course, the internationally influential film
curator, archivist and international consultant in African and African diaspora
cinema.
She has worked with the British Film Institute where she ran the
African and Caribbean Film Unit, and published the "Black Film Bulletin" and the
book, "Symbolic Narratives/African Cinema." She also worked with the Toronto International Film Festival, where she
programmed Planet Africa.
The Movements program of exhibitions and screenings will open on October 16th, and will run until October 27th, and will
take place at the University of the Arts London in Chelsea.
The first panel on the roundtable program on October 18th, which
will run from 10.00AM
– 12.30PM, deals with "The Relevance of Pan-Africanism and Négritude in Cinema Now," and will include a screening of Part 2 of Ms. Palcy‘s 1994 three part documentary "Aimé Césaire: Une Parole pour le XXIème
siècle/A Voice for the 21st Century."
The second panel will run from 2.00PM – 4.30PM and will deal with how the June Givanni Pan-African Cinema Archive promotes its collection and its Pan-African legacy.
The pnaels will be moderated by Ms, Givanni herself; and among
those participating will be filmmakers John Akomfrah, Reece Auguiste, Louis Massiah, and Euzhan
Placy, filmmaker/scholar and
curator, Imruh Bakari , film scholar Laura Mulvey and producer and writer Nadia
Denton.
The event will take place at the Birkbeck
Institute of the Moving Image, The Cinema, located at 43 Gordon Square in London. Attendance is free but you must RSVP HERE.
