It looks like Lionsgate and Justin Simien are in the business of making boundary-pushing contemporary black art. Following an Emmy-worthy second season of Dear White People, which was picked up for a third season, and the launch of his new podcast, Don’t @ Me, Justin Simien’s reach is quickly expanding. According to Deadline, the writer-director has signed a deal with Lionsgate Television Group to develop more original content.
The deal, which was announced July 10 would see Simien both developing and producing original programming for Lionsgate Television Group. Simien’s relationship with Lionsgate dates back t0 2014 when the media titan released his directorial debut Dear White People and produced the spinoff series for Netflix.
Simien is the latest creative to ink a deal with Lionsgate, which has secured TV deals with Dear White People’s showrunner, Yvette Lee Bowser, and Power showrunner Courtney Kemp.
In a statement to Deadline, Simien expressed his delight at his new deal.
