Netflix has released the season 3 trailer for Dear White People.
A few things we see in the trailer include a “checked out” Sam (Logan Browning) leaving her radio show behind and giving it to Joelle (Ashley Blaine Featherson), Troy (Brandon Bell) at Pastiche, Lionel (DeRon Horton) continuing to explore himself, a lack of attendance at Black Caucus meeting and much more. There is also a greater spotlight on the secondary characters such as Al (Jemar Michael) and Kelsey (Nia Jervier).
The trailer seems to depict a lighter, fun tone for the dramedy than in past seasons (not that they were dark per se), but there is a tonal shift near two-thirds of the way through the footage when we see the mysterious secret society, The Order of X, is back. But even then, there are laughs. From the looks of it, the show has pushed more and more toward the satirical style of its feature film counterpart, and this will likely be most evident in Season 3.
Set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface, Dear White People is a send-up of the now post “post-racial” America that weaves together a universal story of finding one’s own identity and forging a wholly unique path. The satirical series — based on the acclaimed 2014 film by the same name – continues to follow a group of Winchester University students of color as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and activism in the millennial age. Through an absurdist lens, Dear White People utilizes biting irony, self-deprecation and sometimes brutal honesty to hold up a mirror to the issues plaguing society today, all the while leading with laughter.
From creator, executive producer, director, writer and co-showrunner Justin Simien, Dear White People stars Logan Browning (Sam), Brandon P. Bell (Troy), Antoinette Robertson (Coco), DeRon Horton (Lionel), John Patrick Amedori (Gabe), Ashley Blaine Featherson (Joelle) and Marque Richardson (Reggie). Yvette Lee Bowser (A Different World, Living Single) serves as co-showrunner and executive producer, while Stephanie Allain (Hustle & Flow, Beyond the Lights) and Julia Lebedev (Dear White People) executive produce.
