As Oscar buzz continues to grow for her film, Mudbound, Dee Rees has set her next effort. —
She’ll direct a film adaptation of Joan Didion’s 1996 political thriller, The Last Thing He Wanted.
The rights were optioned by last year by Mudbound producer Cassian Elwes of Elevated.
Wanted, which is said to have a cult-like following for Didion fans, centers on a Washington Post journalist who gets thrown into the dangerous world of arms dealing by a covert government operation.
“This work is one of my favorite Joan Didion novels and is a brilliant and layered piece of fiction. I am forever attracted to interesting, unexpected characters and Didion is one of the greatest masters of the form. I’m so excited to be able to interpret this literary masterpiece,” said Rees in a statement.
This is one of the Mudbound director’s ongoing projects. She’s also tackling a horror film on black lesbians in rural America with Get Out producer Blumhouse.
