Is this Denzel’s next Oscar-nominated role?
In an exclusive report straight from Deadline, the nine-time Oscar nominee is said to be in early talks to star alongside fellow Oscar winner Frances McDormand in an adaptation of Shakespearean classic Macbeth, directed by Joel Coen, half of the filmmaking duo The Coen Brothers. Scott Rudin is reportedly producing and is currently aiming at A24 to distribute the movie worldwide.
Retellings of Shakespeare have been rampant in Hollywood since the dawn of time. The last film adaptation of Macbeth was only in 2015 with Michael Fassbender taking on the title role and Marion Cotillard assuming the role of Lady Macbeth.
The tale of Macbeth chronicles a Scottish general who encounters a trio of witches who make the prophecy that he will become the king of Scotland. Consumed with ambition and craving power, the Scottish general murders the current king and assumes the Scottish throne. The character of Lady Macbeth is most famous as the power-hungry figure who spurs her husband to take action and dethrone King Duncan.
Washington earned back-to-back Academy Award nominations in 2017 and 2018 for his performances in Fences and Roman J. Israel, Esq. He has received an additional seven nominations, winning Best Supporting Actor in 1990 for his performance in Glory and Best Actor in 2002 for his work in Training Day. Frances McDormand won the Academy Award in Best Actress in 1997 and 2018 for her work in Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
