Denzel Washington is reteaming with frequent collaborator Antoine Fuqua for an upcoming, untitled Netflix film in which Washington will play none other than Carthaginian general Hannibal.
Deadline reported that Washington will work once again with his Training Day and The Equalizer 3 director and play Hannibal, the historic general who took on the Romans and is best known for his victories in the Second Punic War. He is famed for directing his troops while riding on top of an elephant.
Even though his best known for being the Romans’ greatest enemy, he also conquered other areas of the Mediterranean and Europe, including areas of Spain and the Iberian peninsula, according to Biography.com. His exploits throughout his life, including the Second Punic War, took him all across Europe, including, aside from Spain, Switzerland–most notably he and his troops’ scaling the Swiss Alps–France and Italy. As a North African, Hannibal’s war exploits also took him to Africa, particularly Tunisia.
According to Deadline, the film will follow the battles Hannibal waged during the Second Punic War. There’s so much history to Hannibal’s life, including his eventual decline and death, but it seems the film will only focus on Hannibal’s greatest successes.
No word yet on when the film will start production.
