Annapurna seems to be making a last-ditch effort for its Kathryn Bigelow-directed Detroit to be considered during awards season.

The film will be back in theaters in 10 cities on December 1.

The film had major buzz prior to release and appeared on many Oscar lists. However, upon release, the film had a polarizing impact on folks, with many criticizing the film as a moving torture picture and others calling out the fact that it did not have a black director at the helm.

Despite this, universally, most critics praised the performances of the actors. John Boyega and Will Poulter commonly appear on critics’ potential Oscar lists for Best Supporting Actor. Unconfirmed reports have also said that the film would launch a Lead Actor campaign Algee Smith (the true standout of the film, who really deserves to noticed for his work here).

It’s not like most Oscar-contending films are box office smashes anyway, but many were confused that the film was released during the summer as opposed to late fall/early winter when most “Oscar” films make their entry.

On the re-release, Annapurna president Marc Weinstock told Deadline, “This movie creates empathy that can spark dialogue that will, hopefully, lead to healing and change. This country needs that now more than ever. The events in Charlottesville, Virginia, happened after our movie came out. The world has changed since August; the mood is different. The film is not only important – it’s even more relevant. People really consider this movie an emotional experience. They come out changed in some way. It’s powerful. Kathryn Bigelow made a film that’s immersive and visceral and authentic. … It’s also incredibly bold. In every way. People who did see Detroit in the theaters were knocked out by it and really moved. They were blown away by the power of the storytelling and the characters. Those people really embraced the film.”
