The second season of Disney Channel/Disney+’s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place concluded with a major reveal: Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) is Billie’s long-lost mother.
As Vulture reported, the explosive season finale, which released along with the entirety of the second season on Wednesday, saw the Russos discover their ties to Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a powerful young wizard who Alex brought to live with her brother Justin (David Henrie) so he could train her in magic at the beginning of the show, which premiered in 2024, run much deeper than they all thought.
When Billie and the Russos find themselves in danger, Alex makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her daughter, brother and his family.
Billie sneaks out to save her crush, Quentin, from Lord Morsus
According to Variety, leading up to the finale, Billie learns that her crush, Quentin (Recker Eans), has been lying to her. He’s actually an orc who’s been cozying up to her on behalf of an evil wizard named Lord Morsus. Before running away, Quentin reveals that he cares about Billie, who tries to find him, knowing he’ll be in danger for betraying Morsus, but she can’t because Justin put a hex on the house to stop her from sneaking out.
Billie responds to her temporary entrapment by casting a spell that fills every room in the house with gummy bears. Justin is forced to move the family to Alex’s apartment for the time being, and he, Alex and his wife, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), leave the children behind to visit the Wizard Tribunal to learn more about Morsus. As they rescue Bigelow McFigglehorn (Kirsten Vangsness), a Tribunal member under a spell that forces her to work for Morsus, Billie sneaks out of Alex’s apartment, discovers where Morsus is keeping Quentin, and goes there to save him. To her surprise, she finds Quentin alone — Morsus has shapeshifted into Justin and is at Alex’s apartment to trick Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko) into letting him inside.
Morsus, as Justin, takes the boys to Billie and Quentin. After seeing Quentin in his orc form, Roman wants to use his wand to send him to “the Nowhere Zone,” thinking he’s in cahoots with the evil wizard.
The adults discover Morsus’ true identity
Meanwhile, Alex, Justin and Giada are getting closer to the truth. Figglehorn reveals that Morsus’ first name is Torodos, and Giada figures out that the name “Torodos Morsus” is an anagram for “Doom to Russos.” A talking statue called the “gossip stone” provides more invaluable information: Morsus’ real name is Penwolf, which strikes a chord with Alex. They return home, where Alex finds a wooden box decorated with a gold pen and a wolf. Inside is a golden locket, but Alex is unable to open it. And much to the adults’ horror, the children are gone.
Alex and Justin eventually find a button Billie got from Quentin that leads them straight to Morsus and the captured youth.
While all this is going on, Morsus is still masquerading as Justin, which Billie figures out after asking both Justins whether they’re upset with her for sneaking out of the house to find Quentin. Morsus, as Justin, says he’s not, but Justin admits he is, and Billie knows that’s the real Justin. Morsus then returns to his true form and ties everyone except Billie up using magic. He forces Billie to help him open a rift that will connect their world with that of dark magic.
Alex cries as she watches a pained Billie work on the portal, and a tear hits the Penwolf locket, unlocking a wiped memory that reveals itself to the entire room.
The memory reveals the truth about Alex and Billie’s relationship
The memory shows Alex crying as she and Justin are dropping off a young Billie at a boarding school for wizards.
“I don’t wanna go,” young Billie pleads. “I wanna stay with you, Mommy.”
Alex goes to her and explains she “would do anything to be with you, but right now, there’s someone out there trying to find you, and I can’t let that happen.”
Justin is shown telling Alex they have to go. He also stresses that Billie’s grandfather can never find out about her, so Alex casts a spell that wipes both Justin and Billie’s memories of each other. Before doing so, Alex promises Billie that they’ll find each other again one day.
Alex throws herself and Morsus into the portal to save the Russos
Morsus now knows Billie is his granddaughter, but he argues that his son would have never allowed Alex and Justin to wipe Billie’s memories. It’s revealed at the end of the episode, via the gossip stone, that Morsus was the father of Damian Penwolf, an evil wizard who was reformed after falling in love with Alex. Alex tells Morsus that the memory wipe was Damian’s idea.
As everyone’s still reeling from the memory’s revelation, Milo gets a hold of his wand and casts a spell to untie everyone. Unfortunately, it’s too late. The rift is open, and it can only be sealed from the other side. That’s when Alex makes a difficult choice. She shares an emotional goodbye with Billie before tackling Morsus into the portal, which closes behind them.
Billie is heartbroken after learning Alex is her mother, only to lose her so quickly. The episode ends with Billie and the Russos vowing to save Alex one way or another.
