With a new year comes resolutions — or in the case of the X-Men — a total revamp. In an interview with Variety, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed the future of the X-Men films once the characters enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the Disney/Fox merger.
“We’ve been told it’s looking very, very good and could happen in the first six months of next year,” Feige told Variety. If Feige’s words are anything to go by, a new slate of X-Men movies could be in development sooner than we thought.
Feige did not hold back his enthusiasm of the famed mutants coming back under the Marvel banner after 18 years at Fox Studios since the release of the original X-Men film in 2000.
“The notion of the characters coming back is great. It’s nice when a company that created all these characters can have access to all those characters,” Feige said. “It’s unusual not to. But in terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven’t started that yet.”
As we wrote earlier this year, “fans have been clamoring for the X-Men to come under Kevin Feige’s jurisdiction for a long time, especially Storm fans, who have felt like the character has yet to be treated with the correct majesty and respect she deserves. The most recent bout of complaints came after first look images from X-Men: Dark Phoenix was released, featuring a young Storm (Alexandra Shipp, reprising the role from X-Men: Apocalypse) holding an umbrella in the rain. Marvel has already been successful at rehabilitating characters after reclaiming them from Fox; Spider-Man, for instance, finally became the young boy growing into his superpowers we’ve wanted to see on screen for ages. Under Marvel’s direction, Spider-Man has become one of the breakout superheroes of the MCU.”
20th Century Fox is slated to distribute two more films in the X-Men franchise: X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is slated to be released on June 7, 2019. Meanwhile, The New Mutants is slates to premiere in theaters on August 2, 2019.
