With the recent announcement that there will not be a Best Popular Film category at the 2019 Academy Awards, many fans of the box-office Marvel mammoth Black Panther, now breathe a sigh of relief. Many theorized that the sudden inclusion of a Best Popular Film category would mean that the film would be shut out of the Best Picture category. Alas, this does not seem to be the case, if Disney gets its way.

The media giant has published a “For Your Consideration” awards season campaign for Black Panther. By the looks of it, Disney is making a play for both the major and technical categories.

The campaign also hedging its begging bets in the supporting actress categories, campaigning for a total of 11 nominations for scene stealers Michael B. Jordan, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, fan favorite Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett. The campaign also proposes a long overdue Best Director nomination of Ryan Coogler and much deserved Best Costume Nomination for Ruth Carter. The nominations for the 2019 Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2019. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Disney’s Black Panther campaign will pay off.
