Thanks to its Best Picture Oscar win (as well as Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor), distributor A24 has decided to expand Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature to more than 1,500+ theaters this weekend – the film’s widest availability since its theatrical premiere 20 weeks ago (previously, its widest release was 1,104 theaters).

But this is especially significant because the film is already out on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD; in fact, it’s been on VOD for at least a couple of weeks now. So A24 certainly expects that there’s still a healthy theatrical appetite (whether it’s new thanks to the Oscar wins, or renewed) for the film, with this 1500+ screen expansion, which will of course add to the $22.2 million it’s grossed in domestic box office.

A24 doesn’t say how long it’ll maintain this 1500-screen push; it will likely depend on how well the film performs this weekend.

The $1.5 million drama is certainly already profitable, earning about 15 times its budget as of today, and looks to add to its gains; it should also perform well on home video, as one would expect this is one of those titles that will find renewed after-theatrical life, as a film many will likely watch for the first time on some home video format, while others will want to buy and own it, because of its significance.

As for what cities exactly that will make up the 1500+ theatrical expansion, go to the film’s website here and enter your zip code to find out where it’s screening at a theater near you.
