BET’s latest scripted drama, American Soul, premieres next month, and it looks like one to watch if the newest clip for the show is any indication.
In the clip, visionary Don Cornelius (former Teen Wolf star Sinqua Walls) and Gladys Knight (recurring guest star Kelly Rowland) appear to be at a lounge or nightclub of some sorts, discussing business. It is here that Cornelius pitches his vision for Soul Train, which, as he puts it, will be “a national television show written, produced and directed by Black folks.” Cornelius further expresses to Knight that Soul Train is “not whitewashed and not toned down.”
The period drama’s ensemble cast also includes Kelly Price, Jason Dirden, Iantha Richardson, Christopher Jefferson, Katlyn Nichol and Jelani Winston.
The 10-episode series will take a look into the life of grand visionary Don Cornelius, the architect behind Soul Train, as well as the cutthroat environment of 1970s Hollywood and what it was like to work in an environment that was still not welcoming to Black culture, let alone Black people.
American Soul premieres on BET on February 5. Watch the clip below:
