The 69th Emmy Awards broadcasted this Sunday and it was a night of black history! Stephen Colbert may have hosted the laughs, but black creatives officially dominated the comedy category!

First off, Issa Rae kicked off the night by verbalizing the very thing every black person is thinking when watching award shows, game shows, sports, or any other broadcasted competition in existence.

Then, it was a wild rollercoaster ride of wins starting with Donald Glover, who won for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series for the “B.A.N.” episode of Atlanta. He became the first African-American to win an Emmy in the Directing category for a comedy series.

Next up, was Lena Waithe who won Outstanding Writer in a Comedy Series, along with Aziz Ansari for the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None. Waithe made history, becoming the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing.

Take a second and think about the sheer significance of this: Black people and POC dominated the writing and directing category for comedy series. That’s major!

Just when you thought Glover had stopped shining, he went on to scoop the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Atlanta.

To round out the night, Sterling K. Brown won the highest television acting honor by scooping the Oustanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in This Is Us.

As Colbert noted, this year marked the most diverse group of Emmy nominees in the award ceremony’s history. Black excellence and joy reverberated through the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and we couldn’t be prouder! Congrats to the winners!
