The black experience intertwines with the police force in tense-filled ways. Award-winning filmmaker Paul Sapiano is showcasing one such experience on-screen with Driving While Black.
Driving While Black follows Dmitri (Dominique Purdy), a pizza guy and pothead who gets a job as a Hollywood “star tour” bus in response to his mother’s and girlfriend’s pressuring. Dmitri goes through a week of hell that includes busted radiators, weed scores going awry and LAPD cruisers at every turn. Sapiano uses flashbacks to color Dmitri’s past experiences with police in comparison to his current day happenings.
A festival circuit success, Driving While Black is not only social commentary, but it is based off the real-life experiences of Purdy — who is also a writer — while growing up in LA.
Driving While Black premieres in theaters February 1!
