Erica Banks recently shared her initial thoughts on her viral hit, “Buss It.” She said her team convinced her to release the song even though she didn’t like it at first.

“It had to grow on me first because I didn’t like the record, so I wasn’t gonna put it out,” she told radio host Gray Rizzy during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Hip-Hop Nation. “I hated it, but I listened to my team. I’m glad I did, and it has brought me to sitting right here with you today.”

The track was released in June 2020 and peaked at number 36 on the Billboard charts.

“I’m three years in; I’m on my second single. I’m still doing amazing,” Erica Banks added. “I’m just proud of myself.”

Today, the song has over 133 million streams on Spotify, and Travis Scott jumped on a remix version of the track.

“Buss It” samples Nelly’s “Hot in Here” in its intro. It inspired the first major TikTok trend of 2021, which was started by a user named Erika Davila, according to Harper’s BAZAAR. Celebrities and TikTokers partook in the challenge, which gave Ice Spice her first boost to fame.

“I wasn’t sure about it. I didn’t know if people were going to like it,” she told the magazine.

Banks recorded the song in 2019 with producer Sgt J.

“We were in the studio, and we were just playing beats, and I had him stop on that particular beat because I was blown away by the Nelly sample,” she said. “I thought it would be really dope to put something on there because we both knew, you know, everybody knows the ‘Hot in Here’ song by Nelly. So I said I’m going to try this out with my own spin on it and see how it turns out. I actually didn’t like the song. I wasn’t going to put the song out.”

Erica Banks has released additional singles, such as “Aint Got Time”, as well as several freestyles since then.

The rapper is joining the cast of Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta for its 11th season. The show airs on MTV June 13.
