Jussie Smollett is stepping behind the scenes.

The actor is directing this week’s episode of Empire.

This season on Empire, it was recently revealed that Smollett’s character, Jamal Lyon, is dating a man who is HIV-positive (played by Toby Onwumere).  The storyline has and will continue to spark many conversations in the show.  They are creating a dialogue about stereotypes surrounding the virus and those infected, ways to protect yourself (through conversations about PrEP), and they are showing how two people can put love above everything else in a relationship; it doesn’t have to be defined by their sexual orientation or their HIV status.
