This is a new project that I wasn’t aware of before today; but I’ll definitely be watching for any future updates on it.
Above and below are first look pics at Condola Rashad in veteran Macedonian filmmaker Milcho Manchevski’s “Bikini,” which just wrapped up filming in New York City.
In the film, blurring the lines between fiction and reality, Rashad stars as the title character, Bikini, a charismatic, restless former marine who returns from Iraq and unwittingly becomes the focus of a documentary film, as she attempts to re-integrate into society and gain custody of her daughter.
“The film has New York’s scent all over it… I fought to have full creative liberty with this film, without producers or financiers or politicians getting involved. It will be a rare American film where the author has the right to make the final cut,” Manchevski said to Macedonian news website Republika.
The film explores issues of everyday surveillance, exhibitionism and a all while also searching for intimacy.
Will Janowitz, Sarah Goldberg and newcomer Sathya Sridharan round out the film’s starring cast.
An acclaimed Macedonian-born, New York-based Academy award-nominated writer-director, photographer and artist, Manchevski is best known for his classic “Before the Rain,” a story of strife in Macedonia, which competed for the Academy Award for best foreign film in 1995. He’s been nominated and won numerous top film awards over the years, around the world, so Ms. Rashad should be in very good hands here, and I’m certainly curious to see more of what they are working on together here.
The star of stage and screen is currently appearing in the Showtime legal drama “Billions,” which will be returning for a second season next year.
Manchevski wrote the script for “Bikini” with writer WP Rosenthal.
The film is a co-production between Germany’s Czar Film, New York-based Milkman Productions and Canadian shingle YN Films.
