Tracy Y. Oliver’s First Wives Club is switching networks in the Viacom family.
The upcoming series, which is a remake inspired by the hit film of the same name, will now air on BET. It is coming from the Paramount Network, where it was placed after initially being set at TV Land. The latter has pulled out of original scripted shows, and after Paramount passed on the project (which would have starred Vanessa Lachey), it was picked up after Oliver was tapped to redevelop with a Black cast.
Michelle Buteau, Jill Scott and Ryan Michelle Bathe will portray the three leads, alongside Mark Tallman, Malik Yoba and RonReaco Lee as their husbands.
“We are thrilled that Tracy Oliver and Paramount Television’s First Wives Club will be coming to BET Networks. We have been big fans of Tracy, the project and its incredible cast all along. The concept she has for the series fits perfectly with our programming strategy of character-driven content anchored in the black experience, and it aligns seamlessly with our core audience. We are currently working closely with Paramount Television on Boomerang and are excited to continue working with them on this project,” said BET Network president Scott Mills.
While the exact reason for the move isn’t entirely clear right now, the series joins a big slate for BET as it prepares for a fresh scripted push, including the Will Packer comedy Peachtree Place and Lena Waithe and Halle Berry’s Boomerang TV series reboot.
