In what is just the latest of big Hollywood deals secured by our fave Black titans, former Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has inked an overall deal with Amazon.
Coker’s new deal comes on the heels of the announcement that Netflix was canceling Marvel’s Luke Cage after two critically acclaimed seasons.
Per this new deal, Coker, under his new banner Fighting 99th Entertainment, will develop and produce new content for Amazon, which is still reeling off the critical acclaim of the Julia Roberts and Stephan James-led psychological drama Homecoming.
“Amazon is the future, and their bespoke, specific approach to building groundbreaking shows offers an amazing opportunity, one that I’m incredibly thankful for,” Coker said in a statement. “I can’t think of a better place to launch the first shows developed under my Seattle-based Fighting 99th Entertainment banner, and am excited for people to see what we have in store.”
“We’re very excited to welcome Cheo to the Amazon Studios family. From Notorious to Luke Cage, Cheo is a provocative, revolutionary storyteller, and we’re happy he’ll be creating those kinds of bold new series exclusively for Prime Video,” said Vernon Sanders, co-head of Television at Amazon Studios.
Coker is just the latest showrunner to ink an overall deal with a major entity. Just recently, Emmy nominee Issa Rae, star and showrunner of HBO’s Insecure, inked an overall deal with Columbia Pictures through her production company, ColorCreative, to produce projects from diverse screenwriters.
Coker recently wrote the story for Steven Caple Jr.’s blockbuster, Creed II.
