LaKeith Stanfield has given fans a first look at him in costume for the upcoming film on Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton.
Stanfield released an image with the caption, “Black Panther Party coming to you in 2020…the fight continues.”
Stanfield is said to play William O’Neal, the informant who gained Hampton’s trust only to sell him out to the FBI. Daniel Kaluuya will play Hampton. Other stars include Ashton Sanders, Dominique Fishback and Algee Smith. The film is produced by Ryan Coogler and Charles D. King of MACRO. Executive producers include Zinzi Evans, Sev Ohanian, and MACRO’s Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks. Will Berson is writing the script.
Stanfield talked about the project, which was formerly titled Jesus Was My Homeboy, in November 2019.
“I’ve always wanted to be a part of a movie that spoke to the civil rights movement, in particular, the Black Panther movement. It had a profound influence on me in my personal life, specifically Fred Hampton, which this story centers around,” he said. “I’m really really glad to be able to step into this kind of film. When I first started, I always wanted to do films that highlighted some of the sort-of non-talked about things in our history and in this country and the leaps we have taken to get from underneath the bonds of white supremacy. So I was very happy to be a part of this film.”
The film will be in theaters later this year.
