Freeform has ordered a second Kenya Barris comedy from the black-ish and grown-ish creator with Ranada Shepard.
Shepard was the creator of TV One’s Born Again Virgin, which starred Danielle Nicolet, Eva Marcille and Megan Holder.
The half-hour, multi-cam sitcom explores friendship, identity, race and class as two lifelong best friends use each other to get through some of the toughest challenges that they will ever face – figuring out who they are and who they want to be.
Kenya Barris and Ranada Shepard are executive producers; the series is produced by ABC Signature Studios.
This order comes despite the news that Barris was seeking out of his overall pact at ABC Studios, the parent production company of ABC Signature Studios.
ABC entertainment head Channing Dungey addressed the Barris exit rumors during yesterday’s upfronts, saying “We have loved working with Kenya and would love to continue” and that they are “working on future business.”
Barris has had a number of pilots not go through during his deal; only grown-ish has come out of it. He also has a NBC comedy pilot ordered, Bright Futures (starring Lilly Singh and Shameik Moore), which is still in contention at the peacock network.
