Full Color Entertainment, an independent film distributor dedicated to bringing more diverse stories to Dutch theaters, has announced its acquisition of the rights to distribute the restored version of Julie Dash’s critically acclaimed “Daughters of the Dust” in The Netherlands.

Full Color founder Peggy Gemerts: “Independent films by black filmmakers often have difficulties finding their way to the big screen in The Netherlands. Over the years, many interesting works remained virtually unnoticed, as was the case with ‘Daughters of the Dust’ back in 1991. I am thrilled to bring such an iconic and diverse story to the Netherlands. It has the potential to captivate a great audience, regardless of age, gender and color.”

The theatrical release of “Daughters of the Dust” in The Netherlands is set for spring 2017. Restored for the first time with proper color grading, audiences can finally see the film exactly as Julie Dash intended.

The first wide US release by a black female filmmaker, “Daughters of the Dust” was met with wild critical acclaim and rapturous audience response when it initially opened in 1991. Casting a long legacy, “Daughters of the Dust” still resonates today, most recently as a major influence on Beyonce’s video album “Lemonade.”

Full Color Entertainment is an independent film distributor focusing on diversity in film and offering black filmmakers a platform so as to see more varied stories and images on the big screen in the Netherlands. Established in 2014, the distributor has three independent theatrical releases to her name from black, first-time filmmakers Angela E. Roe (“Sombra di Koló”), German Gruber jr. (“Sensei Redenshon”) and Sibs Shongwe-La Mer (“Necktie Youth” – winner best film World Cinema Amsterdam). In addition, the film distributor in collaboration with Noise Film and IFFR, has released the first film of black female filmmaker Debbie Tucker Green (“Second Coming” – winner Big Screen Award International Film Festival Rotterdam).
