Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network has already given a 16-episode second season order for its upcoming next original scripted series, “Queen Sugar,” ahead of its September 6 premiere. Certainly a vote of confidence for the show!
“When we saw the first cut from Ava we knew right away that we wanted a second season,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN. “We think viewers are going to connect with the deeply layered characters and powerful story and are excited to be able to share with them Ava’s director’s cut on premiere night without interruption. We are proud to be a network that supports a filmmaker’s creative vision.”
The new series chronicles the lives and loves of 3 estranged siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana: Nova (Rutina Wesley), a world-wise journalist and activist; Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), the savvy wife and manager of a professional basketball star; and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe), a formerly incarcerated young father in search of redemption. After a family tragedy, the Bordelons must navigate the triumphs and struggles of their complicated lives in order to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.
From director Ava DuVernay, executive producer Oprah Winfrey and Warner Horizon Television, the series will debut as a two-night event on Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on OWN, and will regularly air Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT for the remainder of its 13-episode first season.
DuVernay leads an all-woman directing team that includes Tina Mabry (“Mississippi Damned”), Victoria Mahoney (“Yelling to the Sky”), Tanya Hamilton (“Night Catches Us”), So Yong Kim (“Lovesong,” “Treeless Mountain”), Kat Candler (“Hellion”), Salli Richardson-Whitfield (“Eureka”) and Neema Barnette (“Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day,” “Being Mary Jane”).
