The newly-released main trailer for season 2 of GLOW finds the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, and their eponymous show, in danger of cancellation thanks to a rival men’s wrestling program. However, the women band together to do what they can to keep their ragtag group and their zany show on the air. Each character is going to find themselves in some emotional turmoil, but it seems like Tammé Dawson a.k.a. Welfare Queen (Kia Stevens) and Cherry Bang (Sydelle Noel)’s struggles will be particularly hard.
As alluded to last season, Tammé’s most significant issue in her new job as a nationally-recognized entertainment wrestler is her son, who got accepted to Stanford Medical School. The goal was for her son to move up in the world and hopefully deal with less discrimination than Tammé’s had to, but with her television role being a considerable stereotype, she realizes it’s going to pose a massive problem for her son to fit in with his white classmates and concentrate on his studies.
Meanwhile, Cherry is having some crisis that concerns her getting what looks like a perm. Is she leaving the wrestling ring for good and going into the corporate world? Is she being forced to take on a different role in the show, which has her losing her beloved braids? The trailer doesn’t provide us that answer, but with whatever’s going on, it’s upsetting Cherry to the point of tears.
Along with trying to save their show from a male-dominated television landscape, the second season of GLOW follows the ladies “as they become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad and the ugly realities of their newfound fame,” according to the official release.
“As Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) settle into the day-to-day of making a season of TV together, they confront lingering issues at the heart of their friendship. Sam (Marc Maron) is still same, but now he has a teenage daughter (Britt Baron) living with him and twenty episodes to churn out. The wrestling is harder, the stakes are higher and the hair is even bigger.”
GLOW also stars Britney Young, Kimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson, Sunita Mani, Kate Nash, Marianna Palka, Gayle Rankin, Jackie Tohn, Ellen Wong, Shakira Barrera, Rich Sommer, Chris Lowell and Bashir Salahuddin. The new season will be available for streaming June 29.
