God Friended Me and God Friended Me have both renewed for a second season at CBS.
The news of God Friended Me‘s renewal was announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Tuesday, while The Neighborhood renewal news came in late last week.
Both shows have performed well for CBS in the ratings. God Friended Me has been received favorably by critics and though The Neighborhood was panned by most reviewers, it has a strong audience week after week.
“We’re thrilled with how God Friended Me has performed on Sundays. It’s one of the top three new series on television, has improved its time period significantly, and continues a long tradition of prestige dramas for CBS on the night,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment.
“Our amazing cast and producers have done a wonderful job of bringing this series to life each week with humorous and inspirational storylines. Viewers have clearly embraced our characters and the positive message the show delivers,” said Thom Sherman, Senior Executive Vice President of Programming.
On The Neighborhood, which was renewed along with freshman series FBI and Mangum P.I., Kahl said, “Each of these distinctive shows has made their mark in a variety of ways. Our goals this season were to introduce new series that audiences are passionate about, add more strength to a winning schedule and create more inclusive programming.”
God Friended Me is a humorous, uplifting drama about Miles Finer, an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from “God” and unwittingly becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him. The series stars Brandon Micheal Hall as Miles, along with Violett Beane, Suraj Sharma, Javicia Leslie and Joe Morton.
The show is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. The series was created by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt and is executive produced by Lilien, Wynbrandt, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Marcos Siega.
The Neighborhood is “a comedy about what happens when the friendliest guy in the Midwest moves his family (the Johnsons) to a neighborhood in Los Angeles where not everyone looks like him – or appreciates his extreme neighborliness.” Cedric the Entertainer stars as Calvin Butler, the Johnsons’ opinionated next-door neighbor, who is wary of the newcomers, and certain that the Johnsons will disrupt the culture on the block. Tichina Arnold plays his wife while Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears play their sons. Max Greenfield and Beth Behrs play the Johnsons.
