See actor Archie Madekwe has joined the cast of the Sony feature film Gran Turismo, an adaptation of the best-selling racing video game. Madekwe, who has also starred in films such as Midsommar and Voyagers, will topline the film. The Hollywood Reporter first broke this news.
Madekwe will star alongside Stranger Things star David Harbour in Gran Turismo, which will be directed by Neill Blomkamp. Blomkamp is known for creating science-fiction films such as Elysium and District 9.
Based on a true story, Gran Turismo chronicles a teenager whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.
Created by Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo launched in 1997 and is often credited for enhancing the racing simulation genre in the video game industry. The video game has sold over 85 million units worldwide, making it one of the most successful video game franchises in the world.
The film will be executive produced by Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions as well as Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti.
Shooting for Gran Turismo is slated to begin this month in Europe, with a theatrical release set for Aug. 11, 2023.
